World Meat Congress: Global pig industry urged to battle ASF threat

Leading figures in the global pigmeat sector were given a stark warning over the threat posed by African Swine Fever (ASF) yesterday, when a United Nations animal health expert said the disease could soon spread to some of the world's most important pig producing regions.
Since arriving in Russia in 2007, the disease has reached epidemic proportions - posing a direct threat to countries in bordering regions, according to Klass Dietze, animal health officer for the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation.
