DeLauro, Farr ask Vilsack to require labeling of ground beef containing LFTB
Friday March 30 2012
In a one-page letter sent yesterday, Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Sam Farr (D-Calif.) are asking Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to require all products containing lean finely textured beef to carry a label.
DeLauro, ranking member on the House Appropriations Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Subcommittee, and Farr, ranking member on the FDA-USDA subcommittee, say they are encouraged by a newly enacted rule that requires all single-ingredient meat and poultry products to carry nutrition labels, a law that went into effect on March 1 (see FCN Nov. 18, 2011, Page 20). However, they want a similar regulation change to require all products containing lean finely textured beef to be labeled as such. They praise USDA for giving schools the choice in purchasing ground beef for the National School Lunch Program with or without LFTB (see FCN March 23, 2012, Page 21).
