Gevo to retrofit ethanol plant for butanol production
Wednesday February 29 2012
Gevo is to retrofit Redfield Energy's bioethanol plant to produce biobutanol. The plant sited in South Dakota, USA. Annual biobutanol production from the retrofitted plant is expected to be 40 million gallons (182 million litres) from 18 million bushels of corn (457,224 tonnes).
Tom Hitchcock, the CEO of the Redfield Plant, which is a co-op owned by 650 members, indicated that producing higher value butanol made business sense. "You use the same amount of corn to get a more valuable product," he said.
