Chemical industry drums up jobs fears from TSCA reform bill
Friday July 30 2010
The TSCA reform bill written by House Democrats is impractical, would cause chemical manufacturers and users undue harm, and would cost the nation jobs, industry representatives told members of a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Thursday.
Industry fears about the economic impact of the legislation dominated the hearing, which was the first held on the recently introduced Toxic Chemicals Safety Act of 2010 (H.R. 5820). The bill outlines a major revamp of TSCA, shifting much of the burden for proving chemical safety away from EPA and onto industry by requiring chemical manufacturers and processors submit a minimum dataset for new and existing chemicals and to report existing hazard, exposure and use data.
