22% of Coke shareholders ask for a report on company's actions to address BPA concerns
Wednesday April 21 2010
Twenty-two percent of Coca-Cola shareholders today voted for a resolution asking the company to publish a report on how it is responding to the "public policy challenges" associated with bisphenol A and the steps it's taking to develop and encourage adoption of alternatives to the substance that is used in the epoxy resins that line metal food and beverage cans.
The company's board of directors had recommended its shareholders vote against the resolution, asserting in its March 5 proxy statement that consensus among regulatory agencies worldwide is that exposure to BPA from food and beverage packaging is not a public health risk. Furthermore, it is "physically impossible" to consume enough canned beverages to even approach the daily limit established by U.S., Canadian and European health authorities.
