Judge to hear arguments for and against planting RR sugar beets
Tuesday March 02 2010
U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White is scheduled to consider arguments for and against planting Roundup Ready sugar beets at a hearing scheduled for Friday in San Francisco.
Organic farmers and their allies last September won a judgment forcing USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to reconsider its 2005 deregulation of RR sugar beets by publishing a formal Environmental Impact Statement that could take two or three years to prepare. Meanwhile, the plaintiffs are seeking an injunction against further cultivation of the transgenic variety in time for this spring's planting season (see FCN Feb. 1, Page 5).
