American Meat Institute says COOL violates U.S. trade obligations
Friday January 15 2010
The American Meat Institute last Friday told the U.S. Trade Representative that mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COOL) violates the United States' international trade obligations.
AMI was responding to a Dec. 4 Federal Register notice seeking comments on a World Trade Organization complaint against COOL filed last year by Canada and Mexico (see FTR January, Page 8). In a letter to USTR, Mark Dopp, AMI senior vice president of regulatory affairs and general counsel, says the United States' credibility is undermined when its legislation violates WTO and NAFTA agreements.
