Sugar industry continues to be on a dynamic overdrive with expansion in sugar production taking place in the African Continent and Russia (+CIS states) as well in Brazil, China and Thailand. The cane sugar sector is expanding as the beet sugar sector in the EU contracts on the back of sugar regime reforms. White sugar differential is driving expansion in this sector as "white sugar mill" projects come into scene.
Significant advances in process conversion technologies for the production of high value coproducts have opened up opportunities for new revenue streams to improve the overall competitiveness of the industry. Besides both sugarcane and sugarbeet being very useful feedstocks for the production of biofuels, their by-products from sugar processing are also useful feedstocks for the production of a range of high value coproducts.
In Brazil, biorefining plants producing biopolymers are scheduled to start operating at two sites in 2009. Onsite power production through bagasse cogeneration is also expanding as energy demand in developing economies encourage policymakers to look at renewable energy. Indeed, these are exciting times for the industry.
